Off-Shore Wind potential in India

India is slowly discovering the potential for the offshore wind power generation with land acquisition and environmental clearances making on-shore wind projects somewhat difficult.  According to Deepak Gupta, Secretary of MNRE,  feasibility research is currently being undertaken with the support of Wind Energy Technology.  The possible study will observe the important parameters such as wind pattern and sea-bed quality.  On technology front, not much problems are expected based on some work already being carried out in Europe.

According to Global Wind Energy Council and the Greenpeace International the wind is expected to reach 12% of global power demand by the year 2020 and up to 22% by 2030.

The top 5 countries in installed wind power generation capacity are:

1. USA

2.Germany

3. Spain

4. China

5. India
