Looks like the Indian government may postpone the mandatory use of locally made photovoltaic cells in solar power projects being set up under the national solar mission. The reasons could be to speed up the projects and allow access to the best available technology.
The move may come as a jolt to domestic suppliers such as Moser Baer, Tata BP Solar, Indo Solar and others who have build up capacity expecting the government to curb/limit imports.
The move is considered temporary as Indian builds up capacity and allows free market dynamics to take over.
Though it is mandatory that the modules have to be of Indian make; some states like Gujarat have relaxed that criteria also.
This further complicates investments in module and cell manufacturing in India.
