Solarcon 2011 was held at Hyderabad from9-11th November 2011. The event was good for an understanding of what is happening in the industry.
Surprisingly, the chief guest of 2009, 2010 events Mr.Farooq Abdullah was not present. Nevertheless, it was nice meeting old friends and making new contacts.
Most of the Gujarat, IREDA and Batch I of Phase I of NVVN projects are ongoing with construction. With no new projects on the cards, most of the exhibitors were concentrating on brand building and networking.
Solar is currently going through a stage of uncertainty, the module prices are dropping and exerting pressure on Indian module manufacturers. Indian module manufacturers are also facing stiff competition from China with a decreasing (or stagnant) PV market in Europe. USA and other countries are not helping much. Suddenly the focus seems to be India, but the competition is stiff and with most of the companies not having used their modules on ground for a grid connected project, it gets more difficult for them to sell their products to investors/solar developers.
On the solar developers side, companies are taking slow steps with their initial solar power projects. Maybe not true for Azure, Lanco and other bigger companies that have got their funding tied-up and looking to grow/expand after their initial learning.
EPC companies are working on their initial projects in India with the marketing teams looking to leverage the experience from the first projects.
Most active seems to be the BOS companies with many looking to enter the Indian market to serve the Indian solar industry and also analyse the feasibility to use India as a manufacturing hub.
REC & RPO initiatives from the government is still being looked at with uncertainty. The question seems to be the viability of solar projects under REC and the strict implementation of RPOs.
Overall a good event. It was also nice meeting Mr.Wadhwa, CEO Azure Power; Rajesh Bhat, President India Juwi India; Dr.Kumar, CTO Lanco; Dr.Hasse CEO Centrotherm; Sanjay from E&Y; Mr.Madhava, Chairman from ICE Solar; Mr.Sunil Rathi, CEO Waaree Energies and Mr.Rajsekhar, Country Manager India, Garrad Hassan.
Unfortunately had to miss Renewtech 2011 since this event was held on the same days as Solarcon.
